John Haycock is kicking off our summer concert series this Friday with his unique fusion of West African kora, woodwind and electronic music. John has been studying kora (21 string African harp) for over 10 years with Gambian griot and kora master Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh. Influenced by minimalism and the improvisational nature of spiritual jazz, Haycock’s compositions create captivating and meditative soundscapes with subtle dub-inflections.
A seasoned live performer, John has played at renowned events such as WOMAD and Manchester Jazz Festival. His debut solo LP, Dorian Portrait, was described by DJ Luke Una as "an extraordinary moment of astral perfection.”
Family Mozaik will be opening the evening with some lush soundscapes and ambient beats, helping to get us into a contemplative mood.

Looking ahead into July, August and September, the series of summer concerts continues with traditional folk musician Seb Stone, supported by all-female vocal group Mavka from Ukraine on Thursday 11th July.
On 20th July we have Tokamak, a collective of 10 musicians playing improvised music based on the sound painting system and guided by a conductor using “Ritmo con senas”: a sign language consisting of 150 different hand signals.
August features performances from Leeds-based alternative folk-jazz collective Awen Ensemble, Scandinavian chamber-inspired string trio Northern Resonance, Belgian-Greek multi-instrumentalist Trees.R.Good with support from Jimsun, and shapeshifting classical ensemble NOMAD.
This year’s series of summer concerts culminates on Saturday 14th September with a one-day festival, Indian Summer, featuring an eclectic array of artists from across the UK and further afield: Sijya, Me Lost Me, Vikasati and Sunscuro.
