20 Red Lights, Max de Esteban Exhibition, La Virreina, Barcelona: 10 November 2017- 4 February 2018
Max de Esteban's contemporary, multi-media exhibition which visually explores today's financial system, on display at La Virreina, Barcelona.
Twenty Red Lights is named after a phrase from the Rolling Stones song Far Away Eyes which describes driving through 20 red lights in the name of faith. Esteban links this reckless behaviour to the nature of today’s economic system, in his eye-opening critical evaluation of the financial and technological systems which drive the contemporary world we live in.
The exhibition has three main elements, all conveying different shades of meaning to the same issue. First, we are confronted with twenty financial concepts that underpin the global economic system (unintelligible for anyone who doesn’t work in finance). For each of these financial concepts we are given a definition and an image which allows each concept to be visualised. Each black-and-white image represents the stark emptiness of the commercial world, and has a big red circle which aims to point out the discontinuity between actions and accountability in today’s economic environment.
Then there are a series of larger, fragmentary images of the corporate buildings of some of the world’s biggest investors. The images are abstract and the buildings are barely recognisable, but each one is labelled with a red number which determines their monetary worth, suggesting that numbers and figures are the the only things of importance.
The third element to the exhibition is the video Twenty Red Lights & The Exterminating Angel which juxtaposes a series of interviews with finance professionals who defend and promote our financial system, against dense and garish images which depict the ugly side of capitalism. The exhibition is completed by two unpublished philosophical texts, along with several writings by the artist himself, further grounding his work in an intellectual context.

La Virreina Barcelona expone una exposición contemporánea y multimedia de Max de Esteban que visualmente explora el sistema económico actual.
La primera exhibición monográfica de Yves Belorgey en España llega en forma de una serie de dibujos fotográficos que traspasan las fronteras tradicionales que separan la pintura y la fotografía. El sujeto, Rue des Pyrénées, es un bulevar ancho en el este de París que fue construido durante el siglo XIX para conectar las periferias menos desarrolladas de la ciudad con el centro moderno que Haussmann estaba renovando.
Sus dibujos y pinturas se enfocan en los suburbios de París, y especialmente en los bloques de viviendas sociales de los años 60, que representan antiguas iniciativas sociales que procuraron proporcionar lo mínimo necesario para todos, y que resultaron en un efecto de homogeneización. Bélorgey opone estas imágenes a las de los apartamentos burgueses lujosos que fueron producto del extravagante programa de renovación de Haussmann en el centro histórico de París. Las imágenes de Bélorgey son una forma de criticismo social que ilustran la cara opuesta a la utopía moderna. La falta de personajes en sus dibujos refuerza la idea de que los suburbios tienen un efecto homogenizador.
“Con el suburbio, tienes el lugar del espacio moderno, progresista, pero desde finales de los 70 es un espacio criticado y en crisis.”
Esta exposición forma parte de un corpus de obra mucho más grande que ha sido desarrollado en los últimos 15 años, acumulando una serie de fotografías y dibujos de panoramas urbanos de algunas de las ciudades más grandes en Europa.
