Overall, my internship with Exposed magazine has been a very interesting, fun and fulfilling experience, and it’s a shame that it has to come to an end. The people in the office were all very welcoming and down-to-earth, making for a casual and relaxed atmosphere in which I felt comfortable to contribute my own thoughts and ideas.
Comparing my internship with Exposed to my previous journalism internship in Barcelona for a tourism platform called Divento, they have been very different experiences. I had less autonomy with Exposed than with Divento (where I chose the content and worked entirely from home). However, I often appreciated being told what to write about with Exposed because it took all of the legwork out of it and made my life a lot simpler. Furthermore, I particularly enjoyed going into the Exposed office (which was shared with another publishing company) because it gave me a better idea of what it would be like to do music journalism as a full-time job, and it also gave my day a structure and the much-needed social element which I felt was missing from my internship in Barcelona.
Interestingly, the Exposed end of the office was extremely male-dominated: there wasn’t a single full-time female employee. This thought has unfortunately occurred to me as an afterthought, but it would be interesting to do some research into this area in the future…
